👨🔬 Who Francesco Redi Was
- Born in Arezzo, Tuscany (Italy).
- Served as court physician to the Grand Dukes of Tuscany (the Medici family).
- One of the first to apply controlled experiments to disprove myths about “spontaneous generation” (the idea that life could arise from non-living matter).
🧫 His Most Famous Work
“Esperienze intorno alla generazione degl’insetti” (Experiments on the Generation of Insects), published in 1668, appears in the Opere.
In it, he proved that maggots came from fly eggs, not from rotting meat itself — a revolutionary scientific demonstration.
This work marked the birth of experimental parasitology and helped lay the foundation for modern biology and microbiology.
